Dever’s summary of the book of Judges – “The first two are introductory, chapters 3-16 provide accounts of twelve judges, and the last five chapters present an extended and depressing account of how low the people sink”
Proposition - By the grace of God we will come to see how disobedience always leads to serious consequences -

1:1-26 At the beginning of the book – the nation of Israel continues to trust in God and obey His commands – and as a result God continues to deliver the other nations into their hands -
Read Judges – 1:27-28 –
27 But Manasseh did not take possession of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; so the Canaanites persisted in living in that land. 28 It came about when Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they did not drive them out completely.
Israel did not follow through with what God said in Deuteronomy 7:1-2 –
1 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you, 2 and when the Lord your God delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them.
We must remember what the Lord has said about entering the promise land –
The Lord is going to clear away the nations before you and we saw in the book of Joshua how God delivered the nations into their hands if they trusted God and obeyed his commands.
When you defeat the nation you must commit everything to utter destruction.
The question is what is the nation of Israel doing wrong?
They allowed the Canaanites to live among them
In fact is says in 28 that they became their slaves
We see the start of the nation of Israel on a downward spiral b/c they are not trusting in God and obeying God’s Word – This is the start of it all – disobedience leads to consequences – (in this case the consequences are defeat)
Read 2:1-5 – You see the nation of Israel is beginning to deteriorate b/c of disobedience –
1 Now the angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land which I have sworn to your fathers; and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you, 2 and as for you, you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed Me; what is this you have done? 3 “Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; but they will become as thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you.’ ” 4 When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept. 5 So they named that place Bochim; and there they sacrificed to the Lord.
They nation of Israel did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord –
11 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals,

12 Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord.
